LENGGONG, 26 September 2022 - The state government under the Perak Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) is well-prepared to face floods, especially in 76 frequently flooded locations in Perak.

Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad said this after officiating the World River Day, Trail Tour and Perak Irrigation and Drainage Department 90th Anniversary Celebration at Dataran Tasik Raban this morning.

"For example, in the Hulu Perak district, when it rains heavily in Royal Belum, among the flooded locations are Kampung Sumpitan and Kampung Kota Tampan Air in Lenggong and Kampung Padang in Gerik.

"In these areas, we have placed rescue boats to save the people as soon as floods occur," he said

He added that the District Disaster Management Committee chaired by the district officer in each of the 12 districts has taken precautionary measures, including dredging and deepening rivers and maintaining catchment ponds.

"So far, flood catchment pond maintenance works have been carried out in 336 locations involving an area of 490 hectares," he said.

In fact, under the National Flood Warning Forecast Project, the state government has installed siren warning systems in 33 locations and will add another 27 siren warning systems in rivers throughout the state which are expected to be completed in 2025.

"Flood warning systems have also been installed in two locations around the Sungai Lenggong area to help warn villagers when the river water level starts to rise to a dangerous level.

"These sirens will sound twice as a warning. The first siren sounds when the water level is at the alert level and the second siren when the water level is at a dangerous level," he said.

Perak has 55 telemetry rain stations, 27 telemetry water level stations and 43 flood pump house locations that are under the supervision of the DID to reduce the risk of flooding.

Also present were State Financial Officer Mohd Zaki Mahyudin, State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee Chairman Dato' Mohd Zolkafly Harun and State DID Deputy Director Ir Vasukey Palany Kumar.
