Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad winding up the debate to allow a vote to be taken and the bill was unanimously approved by all the Perak State Assemblymen present.

IPOH, 29 December 2022 - The Perak State Assembly today passed an amendment to the Perak State Constitution (Part One) (Amendment) Bill 2022 to enable the Anti-Party Hopping Enactment to be implemented in the state.

The motion for the amendment was tabled by Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad and seconded by Azman Noh (ADUN Pengkalan Baharu) during the First and Second Meeting of the First Year of the 15th State Assembly at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan.

Then, Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad wound up the debate to allow a vote to be taken and the bill was unanimously approved by all the Perak State Assemblymen present.

During the winding up session, he said the anti-party hopping bill will strengthen the people's faith in democratic practices.

"In other words, it can protect the rights of the people who had voted and have high trust in politicians during the election process, in addition to improving the integrity of elected representatives to provide the best service to the constituents in their area.

"Our decision today will not only create a new history, but is the beginning of a more comprehensive institutional reform to strengthen the country's democracy," he explained.

He added that the State Assembly needs to follow the legal requirements regarding the amendment procedure to Act A1663.

Among the requirements is that this law has just been enforced at the central government level on October 5, and the next process is to obtain the consent of HRH Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah to enable the bill to be adopted and gazetted.
