TANJUNG MALIM, 14 March 2023 – Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad officiated the launch of the largest new stamping line in Malaysia worth RM140 million during his official visit to the Proton Plant, Automotive Hi-Tech Valley this morning.
The new line by Proton Holdings Bhd (Proton) is capable of producing 50 unique components using up to 2,500 tonnes of force, potentially reducing the company's annual component imports by 115,000 units.
Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Roslan Abdullah said in a statement that construction works of PROTON's new stamping line began in early April 2021 with machine installation beginning in July 2022 and fully completed by December.
There are five stamping machines with a single machine capable of exerting 2,500 tonnes of force and two machines each with a pressing force of 1,200 tonnes and 1,000 tonnes respectively.
He added that the new line can produce up to 50 unique components, increasing local content for PROTON'S SUV models as items such as body panels can now be produced in Tanjung Malim.
Following the launch, Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad then presided over the line-off ceremony for the latest Proton model.
"Proton’s development will bring prosperity not only to the state, but also to the people of Tanjung Malim.
"I hope the close cooperation of the state government with DRB-HICOM and Proton will be able to bring benefits to the local people, along with the progress of this new line and model," he said.
The first appearance of the as-yet-unnamed model was held publicly and it is the third SUV in the Proton range after the X70 and X50.
Also present were State Secretary Dato' Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Secretary General Datuk Hisham Ishak, Proton Group Managing Director Dato' Sri Syed Faisal Albar Syed A.R Albar and Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Roslan Abdullah.
