Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi has brought glory to the country as the fifth fastest under-20 runner in the world.

IPOH, 30 December 2022 - The Perak State Government presented an education fund of RM600,000 to sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi who brought glory to the country as the fifth fastest under-20 runner in the world at the World Youth Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia.

The presentation was officiated by Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad at the Presentation Ceremony of State Education Fund and Sports Excellence Incentives to the Perak Men's Hockey Team at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan.

Dato’ Seri Saarani said the fund was to finance his study expenses for a minimum of 3 years at Auburn University in Alabama, United States.

"This is a state government’s initiative to help him pursue his studies at a university that also has the facilities to enhance his excellence in the field of sports.

"We hope that more athletes like him are born because he deserves to be crowned as a youth icon due to him effectively balancing success in sports and academics with excellence," he explained.

Muhammad Azeem will depart on 1 January 2023 at 2.20am to further his studies in Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology from 11 January 2023 to 31 December 2026.

Meanwhile, the Menteri Besar also presented a sports excellence incentive of RM100,000 to the Perak Men's Hockey Team who won the 60th edition of the Tun Abdul Razak Cup Hockey Tournament 2022.

He added that this achievement was the result of the principle of togetherness of all those responsible, especially the athletes and their respective coaches.

"This success is the result of the efforts and sacrifices as well as high discipline in overcoming bitter and sweet challenges. This determination has to be in each and every athlete," he said.

Also present were State Financial Officer Mohd Zaki Mahyudin, State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee Chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah, Perak Sports Council Director Mazlan Mohamad and Sprint Coach Muhammad Amir Izwan Tan Abdullah.
