SELAMA, 23 October 2021 - The Perak Department of Environment (DOE) collected 213.6 tonnes of electric and electronic waste (e-waste) throughout the state for a period of 10 months.

Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Saarani Mohamad said the total is an increase of 485 percent compared to only 44 tonnes of e-waste collected and recycled during the same campaign in 2020.

“This success is the result of the involvement and commitment of 15 Local Authorities (PBTs) and 25 companies that participated in the campaign consistently, with the support of three licensed collection contractors in Perak.

"Moreover, the involvement of the industry sector in the campaign this year also increased by 312 percent compared to only eight companies that participated in 2020," he said.

He said this after officiating the Perak State Level National Environment Day Celebration 2021 at Dewan Majlis Selama here today.

Also present were State Financial Officer Dato' Zulazlan Abu Hassan, State Health, Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee Chairman Mohd Akmal Kamarudin, Perak State Assembly Deputy Speaker Khalil Yahaya and Perak DOE Director Rosli Zul.

Dato' Saarani added that the improvement reflected the commitment of the industry sector related to e-waste management in Perak, showing a very significant increase.

“The campaign, conducted since 2019, aims to sow awareness among the community on the dangers of e-waste, besides increasing public awareness in protecting the environment.

"Through this comprehensive cooperation, the implementation of the electric and electronic goods collection and disposal system in Perak can be carried out more safely, orderly and effectively," he said.

At the same time, Dato' Saarani called on the public to send e-waste from their home to collection centres voluntarily and not to dump this controlled waste into the environment or existing domestic bins.

This is because e-waste is toxic and has the potential to threaten health as well as damage the environment.
