The Perak State Government will enforce the Perak Hotel Enactment 2023 from 1 July 2024.

IPOH, 20 June 2024 – The Perak State Government will enforce the Perak Hotel Enactment 2023 from 1 July 2024 to enhance the quality of hotels and accommodations, as well as to regulate issues of safety, cleanliness and disturbances which are often a concern for visitors.

The announcement was made by State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching during a press conference at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan.

"The Perak Hotel Enactment 2023, approved by the Perak State Assembly on 23 May 2023, was gazetted on 20 July 2023. Now, the Enactment’s implementation is detailed in the Perak Hotel Regulations which have been approved by the Perak State Executive Council Meeting for enforcement.

"The Perak Hotel Enactment 2023 together with the Perak Hotel Regulations 2024 will improve the governance of hotel management and accommodations in the state, enhance public safety practices and environmental health awareness among tourism industry players in Perak," she said.

She added that industry players such as hotel operators, motels, lodging houses, guesthouses, boat houses, campsites, homestays, AirBnBs or vehicles used as accommodations are required to apply for a licence with the Local Authorities (PBT) in their respective districts.

"The government has agreed to give a one-year grace period starting from 1 July 2024 until 30 June 2025. During this period, PBT will provide guidance to operators to understand and implement improvements or corrective actions to meet the stipulated requirements.

"Each hotel licence application must undergo a safety review from the relevant technical departments and agencies, including the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS), Minerals and Geoscience Department, Public Works Department, and Fire and Rescue Department for consideration by the PBT for licensing approval.

"The government will also implement a Local Service Charge (CPT) of RM3 per room/per night starting 1 January 2025, to improve the quality of local services at tourist destinations in the state,” she said.

Also present were State Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee, Deputy State Secretary (Development) Halizah Sipun, State Treasurer Megat Amirul Zaini Jamalullail Megat Jamaluddin, Senior Deputy Director (Local Government) Mufidah Mahfodz and Tourism Perak Management Berhad CEO Nurmalis Musa.
