TAIPING, 20 January 2024 - Besides the tourism sector, the education sector also needs to be involved in raising public awareness in developing historical heritage.

Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad said the development of historical heritage should encourage research, conservation and advancement of heritage as it is part of the country's identity.

"Through a deep understanding and appreciation of historical heritage, we can shape a society that appreciates and respects various cultural layers.

"Hence, historical awareness among the community is important to ensure that this heritage is not just a tourist attraction but a source of pride and wealth for every citizen," he said.

He said this in his speech at the Taiping Town’s 150th Anniversary Celebration Launch Ceremony at Dataran Warisan Taiping here.

Also present were Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, State Assembly Speaker Dato' Mohamad Zahir Abdul Khalid, State Secretary Dato' Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim, State Legal Adviser Dato' Azmir Shah Zainal Abidin, State Financial Officer Dato' Mohd Zaki Mahyudin, State Exco Members, Taiping Member of Parliament Wong Kah Woh, Larut, Matang and Selama District Officer Nasrul Menhat, Taiping Municipal Council President Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir and heads of state and federal departments.

Dato' Seri Saarani added that effective measures need to be taken to ensure that historical heritage is accessible and enjoyed by all levels of society.

"Education on history and culture needs to be channeled via various mediums to touch the hearts and minds of every individual.

"In this way, we can assure that historical heritage is not only seen as a form of nostalgia, but as a starting point for the growth and development of a progressive and knowledgeable society," he said.

Meanwhile, the theme "Heritage Sustainability in Facing Urbanisation" was chosen for the Taiping Town's 150th anniversary celebration.

The theme reflects the need to preserve the beauty of nature and heritage sustainability, which refers to the efforts to preserve the natural beauty and historical sites in maintaining the balance between urbanisation and nature.
