SUKMA XXI Sarawak Ends, Perak Achieves Target.

KUCHING, 24 August 2024 - The Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXl Sarawak has ended after 14 days of competition.

The games torch that was lit last Saturday was officially extinguished last night through a grand closing ceremony at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya here.

The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim with the participation of more than 12,000 athletes and officials.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Sri Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Zohari Openg, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato' Sri Abdul Karim Rahman, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

Perak State Secretary and Contingent Chef de Mission Dato' Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim, State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee Chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah, State Housing and Local Government Committee Chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching and State Sports Council Director Mazlan Mohamad also attended.

The SUKMA XXI Sarawak Closing Ceremony began with the marching in of the 14 state contingents and invited contingent of Brunei, led by the Jalur Gemilang contingent from the 11th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment and the 1st Malaysian Infantry Division.

As soon as the Games torch was extinguished and the tournament flag lowered, the flag handover session was symbolically performed by Tan Sri Abang Zohari Openg to Dato' Seri Amirudin Shaari to continue the 22nd SUKMA in 2026 in Selangor.

At the national biennial games, the Perak Contingent managed to achieve the set target of 35 gold medals, placing them in seventh position behind Sarawak, Federal Territories, Selangor, Penang, Terengganu and Johor.

Besides the 35 gold medals, Perak also managed to win 37 silver and 56 bronze for a total of 128 medals.

Perak’s gold medals were obtained via the targeted sports of pencak silat, muay thai, hockey and cricket.

SUKMA XXI Sarawak involved 37 types of sports through 488 events consisting of 236 men's events, 217 women's events and 35 mixed events.
