IPOH, 28 February 2025 - A notice on the unexpected vacancy of the Ayer Kuning state seat (N.48) was officially submitted to the Election Commission (EC) today.

Perak State Assembly Speaker Dato' Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid officially submitted the notice to Perak EC Director Mohd Nazri Ismail at Bilik Media, Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan.

Dato' Mohammad Zahir said he had received notification from Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad regarding the death of Ayer Kuning Assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin.

"In accordance with Article 36(5) of the Perak Constitution, the unexpected vacancy must be filled within 60 days from the date the vacancy is confirmed by the Election Commission," he elaborated.

He added that the late Ishsam was a leader with the people's spirit and frequently raised issues concerning his constituency.

"He was also active and committed in the Perak state legislature and was appointed to two state assembly committees, namely the Members' Welfare Committee and the Special Select Committee on Stray Animals in Perak.

"On this occasion, on behalf of the Perak State Assembly, I would like to extend my condolences to the entire family of the late Ishsam, and pray that his soul is blessed and placed among the righteous and faithful in the sight of Allah," he said.

Meanwhile, Dato' Mohammad Zahir believed that the EC would take into consideration the Perak State Legislative Assembly Sitting, which is expected to start in mid-April, in determining the nomination date and polling day.

"We believe that the EC will certainly take these matters into account (in determining these important dates)," he said.

Also present were Deputy State Assembly Speaker Jenny Choy Tsi Jen and State Assembly Assistant Secretary Amir Fadli Mohamed Halmi.
